Old World Games Studio: Our Origin Story

Everyone has an origin story. Some produce a valiant hero while others create a horrible villain. Ours is a story of the good guys. At least I hope that is how it turns out. We are a group of people who want to fulfill a dream. Every gamer has a dream of creating a game one day, we wanted to give it a shot and make it a reality for us. We want to create something that gamers will love and enjoy and something we can set in stone, cementing us in history. To leave one’s mark is the goal of every great person, we want to achieve that for ourselves and our little group.

How We Formed

Old World Games Studio came together from the oddest of places. Strangers who have never met in real life, by chance, meet in World of Warcraft. We came together because my brother, sister and I wanted to relive the glory days. I have been playing since the game came out, but quit in 2014, so to relive those days was a no-brainer. We formed the guild Old World Blues, basing the name off the Fallout: New Vegas DLC. Slow going at first but we managed to secure roughly 100 members in the first 3 months. As of today, we are 400+ strong with a lot of amazing people. It was during this time of finding who we are as a guild that we would cross paths. Daniel, I knew from when the game came out, but Tyler by chance one day, would see my recruitment message and ask to join. As for Corine and Philipe, they are my brother and sister. From here, the rest is history.

The idea to form our little studio came from Tyler. One day we were all hanging out in chat and he approached us with the idea. We all had the dream of making video games growing up, but for one reason or another, that dream never happened. Life has a way of getting in the way and pushing dreams aside. Honestly, he did not even have to sell it to us. We all jumped at the idea, and it was set in stone at that point. We threw around a few ideas for a name but ultimately wanted to pay homage to our guild and how we came together because of it. Old World Games Studio was born, and we think it is going to be one of the greatest studios in the world.

Why We Chose 2D

When we at Old World Games Studio came together to start this journey, we talked for hours about what kind of game we wanted to create. We went from wanting to make a 3D with all the bells and whistles to ultimately deciding on going the 2D route. Why? Because of its nostalgia and design. In the realm of indie game development, there’s been a resurgence of interest in classic 2D games. More and more gamers of all ages are playing 2D games. It is fun to see all the excitement around it like we once did as kids. Games like Chrono Trigger and Zelda gave us hours of enjoyment.   Their style seemed so ahead of its time back then. We want to create that magic again and bring enjoyment to a new generation of gamers.

In addition, a 2D game would be easier to learn and start off with. This allows us to experiment and learn to code the game without the stress of 3D modeling. Learn godot this way seemed the best first step. This will give us the skills and experience we need to tackle a 3D game one day.

What Is Next?

Once we have established ourselves and our game we would love to create a 3D game. As to what, we are not sure yet. Maybe a sci-fi thriller, simulation, action/adventure, who knows. The sky is the limit when it comes to gaming. All I know for certain is that no matter what we decide to make, we want to do it with love. We want the gamer to feel the love we have for the game and all the care that went into making it. Whatever we make, I know it will blow you away. Stay tuned!
